Program Director, Diagnostic Medical Sonography

This is an opportunity for a credentialed sonography professional to lead and shape a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. The Program Director will influence curriculum, mentor faculty and students, build clinical partnerships, maintain accreditation readiness, and help prepare the next generation of sonographers for professional practice.

The Program Director provides academic, operational, and clinical leadership for a Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program. This role oversees curriculum quality, instructional delivery, faculty support, student outcomes, accreditation readiness, and continuous program improvement.

The ideal candidate is an experienced registered sonographer and educator who can translate current clinical practice, professional standards, and emerging technology into a high-quality learning experience. The Program Director works collaboratively with academic leadership, faculty, clinical partners, and students to support successful completion, credentialing readiness, and career preparation.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Leadership and Curriculum

Lead the design, review, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography curriculum.

Develop course outlines, instructional plans, learning materials, assessments, assignments, and other program resources.

Ensure curriculum content reflects current professional standards, industry practices, evolving technology, and employer expectations.

Maintain a comprehensive educational master plan and support a structured process for curriculum review and revision.

Partner with faculty to evaluate textbooks, instructional resources, student projects, assessment tools, and course materials.

Promote inclusive, student-centered teaching practices and engage faculty in curriculum development and enhancement.

Accreditation and Program Quality

Support continued compliance with applicable programmatic accreditation standards, including standards established by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS) or other relevant accrediting bodies.

Coordinate required accreditation documentation, reports, data collection, deadlines, and follow-up activities.

Maintain a systematic process for program self-assessment, including review of student learning outcomes, program outcomes, retention, completion, credentialing performance, graduate success, and employer feedback.

Monitor developments in diagnostic sonography, including best practices, regulatory changes, clinical advances, and new technologies, and recommend program updates as appropriate.

Lead faculty discussions and improvement initiatives focused on program effectiveness and student achievement.

Faculty and Operations

Collaborate with academic leaders and department faculty to ensure effective program delivery and alignment with institutional goals.

Supervise, support, evaluate, and develop faculty and staff assigned to the program.

Conduct regular departmental meetings to review performance, address operational needs, share updates, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Participate in budget development and resource planning for instructional equipment, laboratory supplies, technology, faculty development, and other program needs.

Maintain sonography laboratory equipment, instructional tools, and learning resources in a safe, current, and operational condition.

Work with library and learning-resource personnel to maintain relevant books, journals, databases, and electronic resources.

Student Success and Clinical Education

Monitor student attendance, academic progression, performance, and professional development.

Advise students on academic requirements, program expectations, progression policies, and professional goals.

Partner with faculty to provide timely feedback, individualized support, remediation plans, and intervention strategies when students need additional assistance.

Ensure accurate documentation of student grades, attendance, evaluations, progress reports, and other required academic records.

Encourage student engagement, professional involvement, and participation in student organizations or governance activities.

Collaborate with clinical education personnel and clinical affiliates to support high-quality clinical experiences, evaluate site effectiveness, and cultivate productive clinical partnerships.

Professional Engagement

Maintain current knowledge of diagnostic medical sonography, education practices, credentialing expectations, and clinical trends through continuing professional development.

Participate in faculty meetings, institutional events, advisory-board meetings, professional activities, and annual academic planning initiatives.

Represent the program professionally with students, faculty, clinical partners, employers, accrediting organizations, and the broader healthcare community.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. A combination of education, professional training, and relevant experience may be considered.

At least two years of full-time clinical experience as a registered diagnostic medical sonographer.

Active credentials in good standing appropriate to the program’s offered concentrations. Preferred credentials include:

Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in Abdomen.

Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT).

Demonstrated experience in clinical instruction, student supervision, evaluation, advising, or educational leadership.

Evidence of continuing education or professional development in areas such as curriculum design, instructional methods, assessment, program administration, educational theory, or program evaluation.

Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, analyze program data, and work collaboratively across academic and clinical settings.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in education, healthcare administration, diagnostic medical sonography, a related clinical discipline, or a closely related field.

Previous experience as a program director, lead instructor, clinical coordinator, faculty member, or department leader in diagnostic medical sonography education.

Familiarity with JRC-DMS standards, accreditation reporting, self-study preparation, and continuous quality-improvement processes.

Experience with budget planning, laboratory operations, equipment purchasing, faculty development, and clinical-site relationship management.

Knowledge of student information systems, learning-management systems, and academic assessment processes.
